About Gangtok
Sikkim's capital sits on a ridge above the Ranikhola valley at 1,650 m. The state's main tourist base — most visitors spend two or three nights here, using it for day trips to Tsomgo Lake and Nathula Pass (Protected Area Permit required). MG Marg, the pedestrian-only main street, fills with food and shopping after dark. Enchey Monastery sits a short walk uphill; Rumtek Monastery, the largest in Sikkim, is 24 km out by road. The Gangtok Ropeway runs across the valley for one of the easiest viewpoints in the city. October–December and March–May are the clearest months for Khangchendzonga visibility at dawn.
