About Gangtok
Sikkim's capital sits on a ridge above the Ranikhola valley at 1,650 m. The state's main tourist base — most visitors spend two or three nights here, using it for day trips to Tsomgo Lake and Nathula Pass (Protected Area Permit required). MG Marg, the pedestrian-only main street, fills with food and shopping after dark. Enchey Monastery sits a short walk uphill; Rumtek Monastery, the largest in Sikkim, is 24 km out by road. The Gangtok Ropeway runs across the valley for one of the easiest viewpoints in the city. October–December and March–May are the clearest months for Khangchendzonga visibility at dawn.

What's the best time to visit Gangtok?

How do I get to Gangtok?
Most travellers fly into Bagdogra (IXB) or take the train to New Jalpaiguri (NJP), then drive 4–5 hours up to Gangtok. Pakyong airport, closer to the city, has had no scheduled flights since mid-2024.
How far are Tsomgo Lake, Baba Mandir and Nathula from Gangtok?
Tsomgo Lake is about 41 km from Gangtok, around 1.5–2 hours by road. New Baba Mandir is further up the same road, and Nathula Pass is about 58 km away, around 2 hours. Most day trips visit all three in one day, starting early.
Do I need a permit for day trips?
Yes, for Tsomgo Lake and Nathu La. Indian nationals need a Protected Area Permit, applied a day ahead through a registered agency; usually your operator does this. Bring your passport, voter ID or driving licence and two passport photos. Aadhaar isn't accepted.
Can foreigners visit Tsomgo Lake and Nathu La?
Foreign nationals can visit Tsomgo Lake on a one-day permit, in a group of two or more, through a registered agency with a certified guide. Nathu La is open to Indian nationals only.
Do foreigners need a permit to visit Gangtok?
Yes. All foreign nationals except Bhutanese citizens need a Restricted Area Permit (RAP) to enter Sikkim, including Gangtok. It's free and valid for 30 days. Arrange it before you travel.
Is Nathu La open every day?
No. Nathu La is closed on Mondays, and snow or landslides can shut the road at short notice, especially from December to March. Your operator confirms the permit the day before.
How high is Tsomgo Lake, and will I feel the altitude?
Tsomgo Lake is at 3,753 m (12,313 ft), and Nathu La is at 4,310 m. That's high enough for some people to feel breathless or get a headache. Most visitors are fine on a day trip: walk slowly, drink water, and check with a doctor first if you have a heart or lung condition.
What does Gangtok local sightseeing (7 or 10 points) include?
It's a half- or full-day taxi tour of the city's viewpoints and monasteries. The list varies by operator, but usually includes Tashi Viewpoint, Ganesh Tok, Hanuman Tok, Enchey Monastery, Bakthang Falls, the Ropeway and the Namgyal Institute of Tibetology.
