The road leaves Sikkim past Singtam and Rangpo, meets the Teesta at Teesta Bazaar, then climbs out of the valley through tea gardens past Lamahatta to Ghum (2,258 m), the highest station on the toy train line, and on into Darjeeling. Stop for tea or lunch wherever you like. Darjeeling sits at about 2,045 m, colder than Gangtok, so keep a warm layer handy for the evening. The town is known for the toy train (the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1999), sunrise over Kanchenjunga from Tiger Hill and its tea estates. Going to Kalimpong instead? Gangtok to Kalimpong is 75 km, about 4 hours.
