Overview
Lachung is a Bhutia-Lepcha village in North Sikkim at 2,900 m, used almost entirely as the overnight base before visiting Yumthang Valley. Most tourists arrive late afternoon from Gangtok (4–5 hours) and start early the next morning for Yumthang — a flat valley 26 km north at 3,564 m, known locally as the 'Valley of Flowers' when rhododendrons bloom from late April through May. Adventurous trips continue 25 km further to Zero Point (4,724 m) where the road ends in snow most of the year. North Sikkim requires an Inner Line Permit, processed through your tour operator at least one day in advance.
