Overview
Darjeeling, at 2,045 m, is West Bengal's best-known hill station and the historic centre of India's tea industry. The 88 km Darjeeling Himalayan Railway, opened in 1881, was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1999; the toy train still runs steam joyride services from Darjeeling to Ghum (India's highest railway station at 2,258 m). Tiger Hill at 2,590 m is the standard sunrise viewpoint — Kanchenjunga is reliably visible and, on roughly 10 days a year between October and December, Everest is too. Happy Valley Tea Estate, founded in 1854, still produces what is sold worldwide as Darjeeling tea. Mall Road, Padmaja Naidu Himalayan Zoological Park, and the Tibetan Refugee Self-Help Centre are the main town-area stops.
