1 trip to Lachen
Overview
Lachen is the northernmost tourist village in Sikkim at 2,750 m, used as the staging post for Gurudongmar Lake. Vehicles leave around 4 AM to reach the lake at 5,430 m by sunrise — one of the highest motorable lakes in the world and sacred to Sikkimese Buddhists, Hindus, and Sikhs. The thin air means altitude sickness affects roughly one in three first-time visitors; some operators require a doctor's note for high-altitude itineraries. Side trips include Chopta Valley (4,022 m) and Thangu (3,962 m). All North Sikkim travel needs an Inner Line Permit; tours typically combine Lachen and Lachung over 4–5 days from Gangtok.
Travellers often pair Lachen with these nearby places.
