Gurudongmar Lake: Altitude, Who Should Go, Lachen Plan
Gurudongmar Lake sits at 17,800 ft (5,430 m), an early drive up from Lachen for Indian nationals. Who it suits, who should skip it, how the lake day runs, and one night in Lachen or two.
The short answer
Gurudongmar Lake, at 17,800 ft (5,430 m), is an early drive up from Lachen for Indian nationals, best skipped by children under five, pregnant women and heart patients.
- There is no official age limit, but the listings don’t recommend the lake for children under 5, and say the trips aren’t suitable for pregnant women or people with heart conditions.
- Sleep in Lachen, at about 9,000 ft (2,750 m), first. The lake is a day trip from there: leave between 5 and 7:30 am, spend about half an hour at the shore, then come down.
- Indian nationals only. Foreign nationals and OCI card holders can go as far as Thangu, but not to the lake.
- Tourist cars must cross the Toong check post by 4 pm, going up and coming back, under a Mangan district order of 10 September 2026.

How high is Gurudongmar Lake?
17,800 ft, or 5,430 m, say the Mangan district administration and Incredible India. Some travel pages give a lower figure, about 17,000 ft (5,180 m).
Either way, it is far above where you sleep. Lachen, the base, is at about 9,000 ft (2,750 m), and Thangu, the stop on the way up, at about 13,000 ft (3,960 m). The lake is 69 km beyond Lachen, 2–3 hours each way by road.
What is the oxygen level at Gurudongmar?
Each breath at the lake carries roughly half the oxygen it would at sea level, the private trip’s listing says. That is why headaches and breathlessness are common there, and why the stop at the shore is kept short.
Move slowly at the shore, drink water, and leave alcohol for another day: the CDC, the US public health agency, advises none for the first 48 hours at high altitude.
What is Gurudongmar Lake famous for?
It is a sacred lake named after Guru Padmasambhava, and one of the highest lakes in India you can reach by road.
Incredible India tells the legend: the Guru blessed one part of the lake so that it would never freeze completely, even in the depths of winter. The lake is revered by Buddhists and Hindus alike, and prayer flags line its shore.
It is also where the Teesta begins, Incredible India says: the river that the road follows for most of the way up from Gangtok.
Yaks graze the slopes around it, and on a clear morning the snow peaks behind the lake are reflected in the water.
Who should go to Gurudongmar, and who should skip it?
Healthy adults and children aged five and over, after a night in Lachen. Pregnant women, people with heart conditions and children under five are better off skipping the lake, the listings say.
There is no official age limit. Sikkim Tourism’s permit page lists the documents for Gurudongmar but no minimum age, and the age limits quoted on travel forums are not rules.
On the day, though, a very young child or an older traveller is sometimes advised not to go up, operators say. It is advice, not a rule, and it is worth taking.
The listings are clear, though. They don’t recommend the lake for children under 5, because of the height and the long mountain journey, and none of the three trips is suitable for pregnant women or people with heart conditions. The shared tour also names breathing problems, limited mobility, and back or neck problems.
The CDC adds useful context. It says children are as likely as adults to get altitude sickness, and that older travellers are not at extra risk because of their age. What matters more is health: it advises anyone with heart or lung disease, sleep apnoea or sickle cell trait to see a doctor who knows altitude medicine first.
The lake itself is a day trip: you go up in the morning and sleep lower that night. The CDC notes that a day trip to altitude with an evening return lower down is much easier on the body than sleeping high. For a family with small children or older parents, travelling with children or parents sets out which other trips suit them.
The two-night Lachen trip is the gentlest way to see the lake: you come back to Lachen for a second night instead of driving on after it.

Early: cars leave Lachen for the lake between 5 and 7:30 am, operators say.
The shared tour’s listing has the car leaving at 5 am, about three hours before the lake. The private trips’ listings say 7 am, about two hours before it.
The road climbs out of Lachen to Thangu, about 30 km north, where many visitors stop to get used to the height before going on, says the Mangan district administration. It then passes Chopta Valley and crosses a bare, high plateau to the lake.
The listings allow about half an hour at the lake. If nobody in the car has trouble breathing, you can usually stay a little longer, operators say, but the private trip’s listing advises keeping your time at the shore short.
Then the car comes back down. On the two-night trip, you return to Lachen for the night. On the three-night trips, the car carries on past Lachen and Chungthang to Lachung, with a lunch stop on the way, and arrives in the afternoon.
Should you spend one night in Lachen or two?
Two, if Gurudongmar is your main reason to go; one, if you are carrying on to Lachung and Yumthang on a three-night trip.

Whichever you choose, the first night is in Lachen, and that night is what lets your body adjust before the lake, as the three-night trip’s listing points out.
If you are flying in, spend at least a night in Gangtok, at about 5,400 ft (1,650 m), before driving north. The CDC advises against going from low ground, under about 3,900 ft (1,200 m), to sleep at around 9,000 ft (2,750 m) or higher in a single day.
The three-night private trip and the shared tour cover both valleys. Their lake day is the long one: Gurudongmar in the morning, then on to Lachung, with Yumthang the next day.
The shared tour, with homestays and meals, meets at Vajra Stand in Gangtok and is the budget way to see both valleys. The private trips collect you from your hotel and leave the rooms to you.
Is Gurudongmar open now?
Yes, as of 27 October 2026: the road to Lachen reopened to tourists on 29 August 2026, once the Taram Chu route was repaired, and the trips here take bookings.
No closure has been announced since. Roads in North Sikkim can still shut at short notice after a landslide or heavy snow; if a day can’t run because of a road closure, you get a full refund, including the service fee.
Since 10 September 2026, a Mangan district order has required tourist cars going to or coming from Lachen and Lachung to cross the Toong check post by 4 pm. So the 5–6 hour drive up from Gangtok starts in the morning, and so does the drive back.
The seasons matter too. In winter, snow can close the road to the lake. Heavy snow from December to February and monsoon landslides from June to September can close North Sikkim’s roads for a day or more, the listings say, while October and November usually bring the clearest skies.
How far can foreign nationals go towards Gurudongmar?
As far as Thangu: Sikkim Tourism issues foreign nationals’ permits on the Gurudongmar road only up to there, and the lake is for Indian nationals only. OCI card holders follow the same rule.
Sikkim Tourism’s permit page also describes a foreigners’ permit for Thangu and Chopta Valley, applied for through a registered travel agent for a group of two or more. None of the trips listed here goes there with foreign nationals, though; all three are for Indian nationals.
For foreign nationals, the north to aim for is Lachung, Yumthang and Zero Point. The Lachung and Yumthang guide covers the trip they can book, with a registered guide.
The rules for each place are set out in the Sikkim permits guide, and every trip from the village is on things to do in Lachen.
What should you take and have ready?
Warm layers, water, snacks, cash and the ID you sent for the permit, plus a doctor’s advice if anyone in your group has a heart or lung condition.
The permit is included in all three trips; the operator applies for it from the details you add after booking. For Gurudongmar, Sikkim Tourism names a Voter ID or driving licence and two passport-size photos for each adult, and says Aadhaar is not accepted. The listings also take a passport.
For children under 18, the listings ask for the child’s own birth certificate, school ID or passport.
Single-use plastic bottles aren’t allowed on these trips, so bring a refillable one, and keep to one small bag each. If you are thinking of altitude medicine, ask your doctor before the trip rather than on the road.
If you would like an oxygen can to hand at the lake, buy it in Gangtok before you leave, operators advise.
