Tsomgo (Changu) Lake day trip for foreign nationals with registered guide

Tsomgo Lake sits at 12,313 ft, about 40 km up the Gangtok–Nathu La highway. It's the one high-altitude lake above Gangtok that foreign nationals can visit — Nathu La and Baba Mandir, further along the same road, are open to Indian nationals only. This day doesn't pretend otherwise. It gives you the lake, and the climb to it, properly. The road follows the Lungtze Chu the whole way up. That's the river that drains Tsomgo, so you're tracing its water back to its source — and at 15th Mile there's a cluster of tea stalls where almost everyone stops. Most operators drive this road to a fixed schedule: same stops, same eight minutes, back in the car. The permit doesn't fix the route, so we don't. If the light is on the snow, or the river is running hard, or the tea is worth twenty minutes rather than eight, we stop. A registered guide travels with you the whole day. That isn't an extra we've added — the permit rules require it, so it's already in the price. He speaks English, Hindi and Nepali, and he handles the checkpoint so you're not sitting in a queue wondering what's happening to your papers. Your permit is filed the day before you travel. Send a passport copy, your visa page and your Inner Line Permit, and it's done — which is why this day has to be booked a day ahead and can't be picked up the same morning. When to come. The lake is frozen from January into March. April and May bring rhododendrons and primulas on the slopes with snow still ringing the water. October and November are the clearest months, when the lake goes still enough to hold the reflection of the hills. The road stays open through all of it, closing only on days of heavy snow. Two things you'll pay for yourself, and I'd rather say so here than at 12,000 feet: food, and anything you do at the lake — there's a ropeway from the shore and yak rides on the bank, both cash on the spot. Warm jackets, gloves and snow boots can be hired at stalls if you need them. Bring cash.
