Shared or Private Taxi in Sikkim: Which Suits You?
A shared seat costs less, and the shared North Sikkim trips include a homestay and meals. A private car carries only your group, from your hotel. How to choose, trip by trip.
The short answer
Shared suits one or two Indian travellers happy with a fixed plan and one backpack; private suits families, groups, foreign nationals and anyone who wants pickup at the hotel.
A. Pick a shared seat if you are one or two Indian travellers on a budget: the shared Lachung trip includes the homestay, every meal and the permit.
B. Pick a private car if you are a family or a group of up to six, want pickup at your hotel or your own choice of rooms, or include foreign nationals.
C. Pick the shared day if you want Nathula, Baba Mandir and Tsomgo Lake in one day for the price of a seat, not a whole car.
Shared prices are per person and private prices per car. Every shared trip here is for Indian nationals only.

How do shared and private trips compare?
On the same Lachung and Yumthang trip, the difference is who you travel with, where you start, and whether the stay and meals are included. Rows marked come straight from the listings.

From the trip’s listing, always current. Other rows written by Day Trio.
The shared price is per person and the private price is for the whole car. For one or two of you, compare your seats with the car; for five or six, divide the car’s price by your group.
When is a shared seat the right pick?
When you are one or two Indian travellers on a budget, travelling light, and happy to follow a set plan with other guests.
On the shared North Sikkim trips you meet at Vajra Stand in Gangtok, not at your hotel. Seats in the cab can’t be chosen in advance, and each person brings one backpack.
The stay comes with it: a family homestay in Lachung, home-cooked breakfast, lunch and dinner, and the North Sikkim permit, in one per-person price. The listing calls the homestay and the food basic, so expect simple rooms.
The shared listings also say the roads are winding and can be bumpy, so a shared cab is harder going with a bad back; who else it suits less well is further down.
The shared Lachung and Yumthang trip runs over three days, with two nights in Lachung and Yumthang Valley on the middle day. Zero Point, beyond Yumthang, is an extra you pay the driver on the day.
When is a private car the right pick?
When you are a family or a group, want to be picked up at your hotel, want to choose your own rooms, or include foreign nationals.
A private car carries only your group, with the same driver for the whole trip, and starts and ends at your Gangtok hotel. On the North Sikkim trips you book your own rooms in Lachung or Lachen, so you choose their comfort and their price.
Meals aren’t included, so you eat where you stay or on the road. Bags are still limited: the private listings also ask for one small backpack per passenger.
Private is the way for foreign nationals and OCI card holders, as every shared trip here is for Indian nationals only. They travel in a group of two or more, with a registered guide.
The two-night private Lachung and Yumthang trip takes foreign nationals too. Its price doesn’t include the registered guide they need, so foreign guests pay the guide separately to the operator.
Registered guide for foreign nationals on the two-night private Lachung and Yumthang trip: ₹2,500 per day, paid separately to the operator · checked Oct 2026

The same choice on a smaller scale. The shared day puts Nathula, Baba Mandir and Tsomgo Lake in one seat; the private day gives your group its own car to Tsomgo Lake and Baba Mandir, with Nathula as an add-on.
On the shared day there are usually 8 to 10 people in one vehicle, a Sumo, Bolero or similar. The listing gives the meeting time and place, and the exact pickup point is confirmed the day before.
The private Tsomgo Lake and Baba Mandir day picks you up at your hotel in a Wagon-R for up to 3 or an Innova for up to 6, priced per car. Nathula is an add-on you choose at checkout, on any day but a Monday.
Both are for Indian nationals only. How the three Tsomgo Lake days compare, the one for foreign nationals included, is in the Tsomgo Lake guide.
Which suits Gurudongmar and both valleys?
The same rule again: the shared three-night tour includes homestays and meals, and the private three-night trip gives your group its own car, with rooms you book.
Both spend the first night in Lachen and go up to Gurudongmar Lake early the next morning, then cross to Lachung for two nights and Yumthang Valley.
Both are for Indian nationals only, as Gurudongmar Lake is closed to foreign nationals, and neither listing recommends the lake for children under 5.
The shared three-night tour starts at Vajra Stand and includes homestays in Lachen and Lachung, with three breakfasts, lunches and dinners.
The private three-night trip starts at your hotel, in a Xylo for up to 6. Rooms and meals are yours to choose and pay for.
Can foreign nationals take a shared trip?
Not on the trips listed here: every shared trip is for Indian nationals only. Foreign nationals and OCI card holders travel by private car, in a group of two or more, with a registered guide.
They also need Sikkim’s entry permit (RAP), applied for online before they arrive, and can visit fewer places: Tsomgo Lake, Lachung, Yumthang Valley and Zero Point, and Lachen as far as Thangu.
Who can go where, and what to send, is in the Sikkim permits guide. For Tsomgo Lake there is a private day made for foreign nationals, with the guide included.
Which is easier with children, older parents or luggage?
Usually private, because the car starts at your hotel and carries only your group.
The shared North Sikkim listings say they don’t suit people with limited mobility, breathing problems, back or neck problems or a fear of heights, and that toilets on the way are basic and few.
Every trip to the high places, shared or private, says it isn’t suitable for pregnant women or for people with heart conditions. Several add that children must stay with an adult, and most North Sikkim listings that altitude sickness is possible.
Big suitcases can’t come on either kind of North Sikkim trip, which allow one backpack or small bag each. Most Gangtok hotels will keep your suitcase while you are up north, operators say.
What is the same on every day and trip?
The permit, the papers and the weather. Every trip here includes its protected-area permit, and the operator applies for it after you book.
Indian travellers add each person’s name, date of birth and ID number by the cut-off on the day’s page, usually the afternoon before. A Voter ID, passport or driving licence works; Aadhaar is not accepted.
Weather decides some days, shared or private: heavy snow or landslides can close the high roads. Each listing’s terms cover a day that can’t run.
Each trip is run by a verified local operator. Every day and trip from the town is on the Gangtok page, and the ride up from the plains is in Bagdogra or NJP to Gangtok.
