A private taxi for your group from NJP (New Jalpaiguri) railway station to your hotel in Gangtok, priced per car, not per person. NJP to Gangtok is 119 km, about 5 hours by road; Siliguri town is 114 km. NJP, on the edge of Siliguri, is the main railway station for Sikkim, so this drive finishes almost every train journey to Gangtok. Out of Siliguri the highway runs north to Sevoke, where the Coronation Bridge, finished in 1941 and known locally as Bagh Pul, spans the Teesta, then turns into the river's gorge and follows it upstream to the Rangpo check post, where Sikkim begins. From Singtam it is the last climb up to Gangtok. Tea and lunch stops are up to you. After an overnight train, keep the arrival day light: the Teesta road is slow in monsoon rain and holiday traffic. Foreign passport holders can apply online for the Sikkim entry permit before travelling, or get it at the Rangpo check post as you cross. Indian citizens need no permit. Flying in instead? Bagdogra Airport to Gangtok runs on the same road.
